Blackberry Development on Linux

Dear Blackberry.

Would you please stop packaging your RIM development platform (That is written in java and runs perfectly well on Linux) in .exe format that does funky checks and api calls that fails to run in wine. Thanksbye.

On serious note I see many forum posts “Can I install this on Linux” to which all reply “No sorry you can’t” Ye you can install it on Linux but you can copy the installed files over to Linux go figure.

I would go into more details but seriously all you need is a windows box to install the files and copy them over 🙂

Also if you would like to install your applications using Linux. Take a look at barry-utils you will need at least 0.15 since bjavaloader was only included in this release. Debian has this version and there is a bug on launchpad requesting an update at least for lucid.

  1. I absolutely agree! We have 3 Blackberry devices here and use barry-utils but would sure love to see a some cooperation from RIM!

  3. @zenarcher: Truthfully I prefer my nice ubuntu-packaged-applications but it really would have been nice to not need Windows VM to install their SDK.

bjavaloader FTW!! seriously nothing is easier then bjavaloader install filename.cod (It also contains their proprietary bbdrivers ye I mean a entery into /etc/udev/ was so complicated you needed to install their drivers for)

  5. If you want a snapshot for barry, I’m running them for karmic on my PPA:

  9. Builds possible for jaunty too. Just need to see a demand for it.

  11. While we are at it, can we give every vendor that packages their hardware firmware and other agnostic things up in .EXE format (Hello Canon ) a serious collective kick in the behind or a group-sourced spanking?

It’s getting to the point of absolute frustration. Never mind how many web sites block people using Linux despite the fact that the web interface / what not works perfectly fine???

It’s disgusting. Our collective voices should scream.

  13. Vote with your money. Sell those Blackberries and cancel your contracts.

Android or Palm Pre’s phones seem to understand a thing or two about freedom – although much more needs to be done, it’s not anywhere as obtuse vision as RIM’s.
